Latin American and Caribbean Forum on Urban Forestry, Arboriculture and Landscaping

June 7 - June 9

For information visit: http://www.fao.org/forestry/urbanforestry/en/

Urban forests can be defined as networks or systems comprising all woodlands, groups of trees, and individual trees located in urban and peri-urban areas; they include, therefore, forests, street trees, trees in parks and gardens, and trees in derelict corners. Urban forests are the backbone of the green infrastructure, bridging rural and urban areas and ameliorating a city’s environmental footprint. Urban and peri-urban forestry (UPF) is the practice of managing urban forests to ensure their optimal contributions to the physiological, sociological and economic well-being of urban societies. FAO supports the development of UPF actions, projects and strategies for the promotion of a sustainable and resilient urban development model.

“For the first time, more than half the world’s population live in cities and towns. By extension, urban and peri-urban forestry is becoming the window through which people make judgements about all the worlds’ trees and forests. We must ensure that cities, trees and forests grow together to meet the needs of urbanized societies and to convey the importance of all forests to life on our planet”  – Eduardo Rojas-Briales, former Assistant Director-General and Head of the Forestry Department, FAO, Rome, November 2010

Latin American and Caribbean Forum on Urban Forestry, Arboriculture and Landscaping

7-9 June 2017, Lima, Peru

The world’s growing demand for energy, food and housing, combined with a severe shortage of urban governance and planning, is leading to an unsustainable exploitation of urban forests and green spaces. This puts significant pressure on the natural resources upon which the world’s booming urban population relies. Building on a New Urban Agenda arising from the 2016 Habitat III meeting in Quito Ecuador, the Latin American Development Bank (CAF) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are organizing the Latin American and Caribbean Forum on Urban Forestry, Arboriculture and Landscaping for Urban Forests and Green Spaces. Expect to hear exchanges in Lima between international, regional and local stakeholders interested in decision-making processes, best practices, lessons learned and opportunities for the proper design, establishment, maintenance and restoration of urban forests and green spaces across the region. Should you wish to participate in the event, please compile the belowRegistration Form and send it to Mr Simone Borelli (simone.borelli@fao.org) and Ms Michela Conigliaro (michela.conigliaro@fao.org).
